Stories tell that marriages have been banned by Emperor Claudius II as he thought that married men prove to be bead soldiers. This led St. Valentine to arrange for marriages in secret. And, since it was considered as a crime, he was imprisoned and sentenced to death for the same. During the imprisonment itself, he believed to have fallen in love with the daughter of the jailer and so he sent a love letter to her bearing a signature as from your Valentine on 14th of February. And, it was the day of his execution when he said goodbye to the jailer’s daughter. A book named as Martyrologium Hieronymianum, has mention of the name ‘Valentine’.
